This week I spent some time redesigning my resume to reflect my personality. My old resume worked, but in this competitive market I think it just blended into the myriad of other standard black and white resumes. I had been doing some research on creative resumes and the pros and cons of stepping out of the box and actually “designing” your resume. There are two schools of thought on creating a resume: one believes that you should stick with a familiar format, the other suggests that you let your personality come through in your resume. Here are some links to what both sides have to say:

So I took some tips from both sides of the board. I went with a design that incorporated a full bleed so that in a stack it would stick out. Then I used creative typography to highlight my experience and skills. I was sure to keep the details about my experience very short and to the point. In the bottom section, I used info-graphics to highlight my experience, skills and personal attributes. I also sprinkled in some tasteful and simple icons to draw the viewers’ attention to each section of my resume. Lastly, I made sure to add in some fun and unique facts that make me more personal. Will building my own wedding cake topper entirely out of Legos land me a job? Probably not, but I’ve met and worked with a number of art directors that would be curious to interview someone who has. Isn’t that the goal of the resume, to get an interview? Once I get in the door I can let my work and affability do the talking.

[box style="note"]My wife always reminds me that I forgot the accented é in résumé but prospective employers don’t typically search using the word résumé, so I had to go with the grammatically incorrect resume. Read more on why and how to land a job at Apple or Facebook.[/box]

So what are your thoughts or experience on resumes? What school of thought do you subscribe to? I’d love to hear your opinion on the subject.

It’s a very well designed resume!

I see it like an infography of your skills and experience :)

Very well designed! I think it’s hard to create a resume in the creative world where the fine line between creativity and professional has to be drawn. I think you did a great job balancing the two. For your profession, I think you nailed it!

I enjoy it A LOT. I love that you show infographics as it provides the information while showing off the skillset at the same time. I find the QR code too big. Generally, I’m not a QR code fan as I don’t find it useful in so many situations. The QR code overtakes the top right of the imagery and disrupts the flow.
